About The Chronicles of Oz

The Chronicles of Oz is an Australian full-cast audio drama from Crossover Adventure Productions, written and directed by Aron Toman. Beginning with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 2017, the series reimagines L. Frank Baum’s books as a continuing political fantasy, performed by an international cast with original music and sound design.

The starting point is familiar: Dorothy arrives in Oz, a witch dies, and a girl needs to find her way home. But that death leaves a power vacuum—and Dorothy has landed in the middle of a revolution.

Oz meets The West Wing

What happens to a country when its Wizard disappears? What does a Scarecrow know about governing? And how does a young princess turn a claim to the throne into the trust of her people?

The Chronicles of Oz follows those questions through Baum’s strange and inventive world. Talking animals, enchanted objects and unlikely friendships share the story with contested borders, divided loyalties and decisions that carry consequences beyond the Emerald City.

This is an adaptation of the Oz books, with their creatures, characters and adventures at its heart. It also gives those characters room to disagree, make mistakes and live with the results. Getting to the end of the Yellow Brick Road is only the beginning.

The people behind the sound

The production brings together performers recording in Melbourne and remotely around the world. Their performances are combined with music, effects and constructed soundscapes to create Oz entirely through audio.

The core creative team includes:

  • Aron Toman — creator, writer, director and sound designer; also the voice of the Scarecrow.
  • David Nagel — sound design and post-production.
  • Tony Diana — original music.
  • Daniel Burnett — Australian sound recording.

The cast expands with each adventure, from Kara Dennison’s Dorothy Gale to Rob Lloyd’s Wizard. Full cast and production credits appear on each season and special’s page.

Who is it for?

The Chronicles of Oz is made with an adult audience in mind, combining fantasy adventure with political conflict and complicated relationships.

You don’t need to have read Baum’s books to follow the story. Longtime Oz readers will recognise characters and places beyond the familiar first adventure; newcomers can discover them alongside Dorothy and her companions.
